Benefits of Long-Term Rehab Center?

We examine the inquiries about long-term rehab centers, which hold a significant place in the quest for a permanent solution in the treatment of addiction.

Long-term rehab centers provide substance misuse treatment over an extended period compared to a standard inpatient or outpatient treatment program. Patients typically live at the rehab center as part of the treatment plan, so the programs are often referred to as “long-term residential treatment.” Long-term substance misuse treatment varies but can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years or longer depending on several factors, such as the patient’s needs, the facility, and the specific program. Long-term drug treatment programs can help people struggling with addiction by providing intensive, structured care. While individuals progress through addiction treatment at different rates, research suggests that longer treatment times are associated with better outcomes.

Who Can Benefit From Long-Term Rehab Treatment?

Addiction, clinically referred to as a substance use disorder (SUD), is a chronic, relapsing health condition in which it is difficult for a person to cut back or stop their substance use, despite experiencing negative health, occupational, and social consequences. According to the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), more than 41 million people aged 12 and older needed treatment for SUD in the past year. Unfortunately, just 4 million people entered drug or alcohol addiction treatment in the same year.3 While SUD is treatable, for many people, addiction cannot be overcome by simply discontinuing the use of alcohol or drugs. The health condition benefits from evidence-based treatment, which often takes place in an inpatient or outpatient setting. There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to treatment and treatment can include short- or long-term rehab.

Treatment Length

Substance misuse treatment programs vary but are often divided into “stages,” which may include medically assisted detoxification, rehabilitation therapy, and aftercare. Treatment is offered in either an inpatient or outpatient treatment facility. Though treatment lengths vary, inpatient or residential treatment centers may be able to accommodate patients for longer periods of time than outpatient rehab facilities. Long-term inpatient rehab centers typically involve several days of medically assisted detox, followed by 90 to 120 days of intensive substance misuse therapy and aftercare planning. Other shorter-term options are also available, such as:

– Short-term rehab.

– 30-day programs.

– 60-day programs.

– 90-day programs.

– Weekend rehab.

– Same-day emergency detox.

“Long-term rehab programs will generally have patients follow a structured routine allowing them to remove themselves from a potentially chaotic and unpredictable routine they may have been in prior to treatment.”

What to Expect During Long-Term Rehab

Every facility is different, but patients receiving long-term treatment inside a residential inpatient facility may begin with detox. The detox process helps patients achieve a substance-free state as comfortably and safely as possible, under the care of medical professionals. During this time, medical professionals can help manage the symptoms of withdrawal, which can be particularly important for patients at risk of experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Patients may receive medications during this process and will be monitored around the clock in case any complications arise.

This can help patients more easily transition into long-term rehab. Detox is only the first stage of treatment. Without additional substance misuse treatment, successful completion of detox rarely guarantees lasting recovery.

Ongoing therapy may include several services to help patients learn to stay substance-free and how to be productive at home and work and in society, such as.

Group and/or individual therapy: Patients may meet on their own with a therapist regularly to develop an individualized treatment plan or in a group therapy setting with other patients to foster a sense of community.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT helps patients learn how to identify, avoid, and cope with triggers.

Multidimensional family therapy (MDFT): MDFT involves therapy sessions for both the individual and the family. It is designed to help young people maintain sobriety by working on reducing harmful behaviors while encouraging positive, healthy behaviors.

Contingency management (CM): CM is utilized to encourage positive behaviors, such as maintaining sobriety or participating in assigned tasks. This can involve providing tangible incentives as a reward for drug-free urine samples, such as getting movie passes, food items, vouchers, or personal items.

Motivational interviewing: Motivational interviewing is another technique that is used to increase an individual’s motivation to change, as well as encourage the patient to continue treatment and abstain from drug or alcohol use.

12-step facilitation therapy: Patients may participate in various support groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

Holistic therapy: Outdoor activities, such as nature outings, out-of-town trips, and outreach programs, may also be a part of long-term rehab programs. Patients may participate in art therapy, music therapy, sports, and various activities as well.

Amenities: The amenities offered by the facility vary. Some long-term rehab centers provide luxury treatment services, which may include meditation, spa treatments, special meal preparation, and private rooms.

The Benefits of Long-Term Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers

Addiction is a complex disease that can cause long-lasting changes and consequences to a person’s brain, which is why staying in treatment long enough is critical. For patients wondering what length of stay is right for them, long-term rehabilitation programs can have several benefits.

High level of support: Long-term rehab programs offer a high level of support that might not be available in other types of treatment programs. Because long-term term rehab often takes place in residential inpatient facilities, patients benefit from around-the-clock support. This can help patients focus on their recovery and avoid triggers they may encounter outside of the facility.

Substance-free environment: Long-term rehab programs at residential inpatient facilities have patients live in a safe, substance-free environment. This can help patients learn how to live in an environment without alcohol and drug. Removing potential triggers can be especially helpful during early recovery.

Structured routine: Many patients find achieving and maintaining recovery is easier when they have a structured routine. Long-term rehab programs will generally have patients follow a structured routine allowing them to remove themselves from a potentially chaotic and unpredictable routine they may have been in prior to treatment.

Peer support: Being surrounded by peers who are also in recovery can help patients build a supportive community.

In what situations is it recommended?

You or a loved one may benefit from attending long-term substance abuse treatment if you:
-Have relapsed in the past.
-Have been struggling with addiction for a long time.
-Have a co-occurring mental health disorder (e.g., anxiety or depression) and need dual-diagnosis treatment.
-You don’t have a stable home environment.
-You are in a specific demographic group (e.g., adolescents, pregnant women, or women who have children).

You need daily support and structured care that an outpatient program can’t offer.
